#OSGEO Log: 2013-01-17

15:35:42ww:hello
15:36:41ww:a question. i have these .NTF files that contain DTM information, and I'm trying to do something useful with them.
15:36:58ww:ogr2ogr can understand them just fine and make them into, e.g. shapefiles.
15:37:38ww:but what they actually contain is a bunch of point data, so when i import it into grass it tries to add zillions of points to some sort of r-tree and blows up
15:38:11ww:since i know the resolution of these points, i ought to be able to instead make it into raster format before telling grass...
15:38:18ww:question is... how?
18:41:00jmckenna:reports of trac being down..anyone else have this issue? trac.osgeo.org will report to SAC list now
18:41:18wildintellect:jmckenna, I'll go look
18:41:47dbb:I am in the maachine now jmckenna
18:41:59dbb:but I have not found anything
18:42:47wildintellect:apache appears to not be working (based on munin chart)
18:43:05dbb:right cant hit localhost
18:43:13dbb:it doesnt respond, though I see apache running
18:43:31dbb:there is disk space and no crazy processes
18:43:36wildintellect:I'll just restart apache
18:45:17wildintellect:hmm, apache restart and it's still not listening on port 80
18:45:26nhv:it is not down just very slow
18:45:45nhv:usually timing out from here before anything comes in
18:46:29wildintellect:well looking at the machine, it doesn't appear to be listening to port 80
18:46:51wildintellect:at least not on ipv4
18:47:02wildintellect:though it is coming up on ipv6
18:47:40wildintellect:guess that's the way it shows on debian (odd)
18:47:56nhv:it is very *slow* but comes in eventually here
18:48:25nhv:have connected to ossim,gdal,postgis tracs
18:48:26wildintellect:since I restarted, it's not slow for me
18:48:32nhv:cool
18:48:55nhv:much better :-)
18:49:25* wildintellect reminds himself about the need to move to mod_wsgi
18:50:36jmckenna:works well here again. thanks wildintellect and all for fast response!
19:31:08CameronShorter:osgeolive meeting at #osgeolive in 3 mins.
19:31:08CameronShorter:board meeting here at #osgeo in 33 mins
19:51:21FrankW_G:wildintellect, jmckenna: by the way, last time I saw trac being really slow I check the server-status and there seemed to be alot of bot timeline requests for date ranges so I'd like to keep an eye on this and try to make the robots.txt more restrictive. It is a hassle though to have to do it for so many domains.
19:52:25wildintellect:you should be able to wildcard that (could even use 1 robots.txt for all of them, stored centrally)
19:53:17FrankW_G:I checked the robots.txt spec, and wildcards are not support except for one particular case.
19:53:28FrankW_G:There is only one robots.txt file (see http://trac.osgeo.org/robots.txt)
19:53:32FrankW_G:but it has to list each subdomain.
19:53:42FrankW_G:I might write a little python script to generate it from a list of projects.
19:54:04wildintellect:that sounds like a good idea
19:55:09FrankW_G:I thought I had created a ticket on this issue, but I don't see it now.
20:02:10jmckenna:hi all, Board meeting time
20:02:23mlucas:here
20:02:23CameronShorter:Cameron here.
20:02:27* FrankW_G is present.

20:11:38jmckenna:next item: Face-to-Face Board meeting
20:11:39sigq:osgeofeed: Changeset [9570]: Adding a TilleMill image <http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/changeset/9570>
20:12:07mlucas:I'll be at Minneapolis and Nottingham
20:12:50jmckenna:I'm likely to be in Minneapolis (FOSS4G-NA) as well, in May
20:12:53CameronShorter:as mentioned before, I won't be able to travel to a face to face, but please go ahead and plan without me.
20:13:28jmckenna:i'm very open to having a virtual meeting, over a block of 2 hours, if we can't do a face-to-face
20:13:36CameronShorter:I might be able to dial in for an hour or 2 teleconference.
20:13:54FrankW_G:I prefer something virtual.
20:14:00aghisla:I plan to be in Nottingham, and likely in other European conferences. I am of course available for virtual meeting.
20:14:08jmckenna:actually i prefer virtual as well, so we can all attend
20:14:24mlucas:I'd prefer that if we could do Google Hangout, irc really slows the discussion down
20:14:51jmckenna:mlucas: sounds good to me
20:14:54jmckenna:timing?
20:15:33jmckenna:how is 31 January?
20:15:35sigq:osgeofeed: Changeset [9571]: New interface image for tilemill overview <http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/changeset/9571>
20:15:37CameronShorter:I suggest a timeslot of NOW-1 hour (for up to 2 hours)
20:15:39jmckenna:(sooner than later)
20:15:50mlucas:I'm on a cruise until 5 Feb
20:16:07aghisla:I will be traveling on 31st until 9th Feb.
20:16:11jmckenna:ok, hmm
20:16:16jachym:time slot now-1 fine for europe
20:16:24jachym:let's put doodle for this?
20:16:28FrankW_G:I thought we were contemplating quite a bit more time than 2hours?
20:16:41jmckenna:2 hour min
20:17:06jmckenna:7 Feb?
20:17:26mlucas:aghisla is out until 9 Feb
20:17:28aghisla:I'll be at GRASS meeting in Genova, and most likely will be online.
20:17:38jmckenna:oh read that wrong soory aghisla
20:17:56aghisla:so count me in for half a day meeting or bit more
20:18:03jmckenna:14 feb? doodle is fine jachym
20:18:11CameronShorter:I'm +1 for all proposed days so far.
20:18:25jmckenna:does this require a motion?
20:18:32jachym:-1 for the whole week after 9th febr
20:18:54jachym:I'll preare doodle for this. what parameters should it have?
20:19:15jachym:proposal: we fix the time slot first, the date then will be fixed with doodle (?)
20:19:24CameronShorter:I'd prefer to limit the meeting to 3 hours.
20:19:37jmckenna:3 hours is good
20:20:25jmckenna:we can bring the doodle to the mailing list
20:20:39CameronShorter:I'm assuming that everyone is ok for this day of the week? (if not on holidays)
20:20:58jmckenna:good here
20:21:01mlucas:good here
20:21:15aghisla:same for me
20:21:18FrankW_G:I'd actually be open to weekends too, taking a large part of a work day is going to be slightly ackward for me.
20:21:21jachym:no problem
20:21:35FrankW_G:But I can deal with any day.
20:21:36mlucas:weekend is fine for me
20:21:42jmckenna:weekend good for me
20:21:54jachym:usually fine for me, 3 hours should be fine
20:22:01CameronShorter:Sat is hard for me, but Sun is ok, (which is Mon for me)
20:22:10jmckenna:ok we must make a doodle of options. jachym i can help with params
20:22:36jachym:ok, I'll make first draft version and send you the admin url of the pool
20:22:49jmckenna:next agenda item: next AGM
20:22:51aghisla:thanks jachym!
20:23:01* jachym did nothing yet
20:23:24aghisla:I think ahead :_
20:23:25aghisla::)
20:23:49jmckenna:for AGM the logical timing is during FOSS4G Nottingham
20:24:12FrankW_G:agreed
20:24:18jachym:agreed
20:24:41mlucas:agreed
20:24:43jachym:for 2012, we will not make it anyway
20:24:46jmckenna:jo and the local committee are very open to fitting us in a timeslot
20:25:03aghisla:I agree
20:25:19CameronShorter:+0 for me, (as I won't be able to attend where ever it may be)
20:25:44jmckenna:I motion to hold the OSGeo Annual General Meeting during the FOSS4G Nottingham event in September
20:25:52aghisla:second
20:26:01mlucas:+1
20:26:08jachym:+1
20:26:22FrankW_G:+1
20:26:34CameronShorter:+0
20:26:40jmckenna:I can take an action item to contact jo/peter to make sure they know we are confirmed
20:26:54mlucas:great
20:27:02mpg:+0
20:27:09jmckenna:next item: FOSS4G updates
20:27:10* jachym supports this
20:27:29jmckenna:nothing specific other than relaying Peter's Notthingham update
20:27:56jachym:note: missing item in the wiki - Bucharest (Foss4g-cee)
20:28:16jmckenna:they will need seed money shortly (Nottingham committee)
20:28:32jmckenna:jachym: please add other foss4gs
20:28:46jachym:done
20:28:57jmckenna:FOSS4G NA registration opened. and call for sponsors
20:29:23jmckenna:(at almost the same time as foss4g nottingham)
20:29:53jmckenna:any other FOSS4G updates?
20:30:24jachym:can I go on with short foss4g-cee info?
20:30:33jmckenna:please do
20:31:02jachym:As you might now, in 2012, we had first FOSS4G-CEE in Prague. It was nice.
20:31:33jachym:For 2013, we knew, it will be difficult (thanks to foss4g global), but the Bucharest team still wanted to go.
20:32:10jachym:I've checked several times in Romania (this week for the last time) how things are going), response was always positive
20:33:01jmckenna:jachym: great, i was not aware of Bucharest plan
20:33:07mlucas:when is it scheduled?
20:33:14jachym:Just for this week, Vasile Crăciunescu said, he had some family troubles and things were not moving along
20:34:05jachym:to say the truth, we still did not see *any* progress at their side. They even did not require any server passwords etc (all the infrastructure is hosted at our servers).
20:34:08jachym:May
20:34:55jachym:Vasile was very positive and enthusiastic about 2013, but I'm not sure, whether it will be organized or not.
20:35:10jachym:So, we will see :-/
20:35:25aghisla:Can we help make it happen?
20:35:26jachym:jmckenna: it was announced at the end of 2012 in Prague
20:35:35jmckenna:thanks jachym please keep me in the loop for this
20:35:46jachym:I see no way. Vasile did not require any help, any support.
20:36:17jachym:for 2014 we (Prague team) will continue having an eye on this (it's "our baby" in a way)
20:36:48jmckenna:jachym: maybe we can discuss this more offline, 2013 i mean
20:36:51aghisla:I see
20:36:52jachym:not to forget, it was required to make it FOSS4G-E for 2014
20:37:11jachym:(E for europe, not for East ;-) )
20:37:18jmckenna:E = great plan!
20:37:20jachym:howg
20:38:11jmckenna:i'm very focused on making these regional events happen. it seems the global is strong so ive been dedicating my time and trips to regional
20:38:37jmckenna:ok i guess we can move onto next item
20:38:49jmckenna:next item: MoU with universities
20:39:28jmckenna:aghisla: you have the floor
20:39:36aghisla:I have a few updates, mainly I report what Suchith mailed to several universities that required more information on MoUs
20:41:01aghisla:universities of Kathmandu, Melbourne, Kentucky, Warsaw and Mexico asked how to establish open source geospatial labs
20:41:23aghisla:there is a lot of momentum
20:41:33jmckenna:wow, that is excellent news
20:41:42aghisla:I am still following Suchith's steps on the procedures
20:42:02jmckenna:it sounds like a lot of work for you aghisla
20:42:07aghisla:and plan to be more active in following months to support these initiatives
20:42:32jmckenna:thank you for this hard work
20:42:45aghisla:well suchith, helena and charles schweik did a great job so far
20:43:00jmckenna:are we documenting this process on the wiki?
20:43:08CameronShorter:I'm interested to know who at the Uni of Melbourne, Australia is enquiring. (I did suggest it to someone, would like to know if it is the same person). You can email me about it later if you like.
20:43:28aghisla:not yet but it is quite needed, jmckenna
20:43:46jmckenna:aghisla: ok cool, as we go we can document and develop process
20:44:15aghisla:CameronShorter: University of Melbourne, our contact is Chris Pettit
20:44:22aghisla:let me find the mail
20:44:59CameronShorter:aghisla, ok, that is my contact.
20:45:04aghisla:the collaboration will be held within the project Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN) http://aurin.org.au/
20:45:06sigq:Title: AURIN | Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (at aurin.org.au)
20:45:07aghisla:ok great!
20:45:58aghisla:I will keep you updated on the topic. Suchith asked me to take care of announcements on osgeo website
20:46:04aghisla:and relevant lists
20:46:18jmckenna:thanks aghisla
20:46:26jmckenna:does anyone have any other agenda items to discuss with the Board? open floor for all IRC lurkers
20:46:34jmckenna:we have a few minutes
20:46:44aghisla:btw, FrankW_G there is a pending request for a news item about Newcastle lab
20:46:45mlucas:none here
20:46:50jachym:speaking about conferences
20:46:52mdsmith:awesome news about the university outreach
20:47:08jachym:I'll prepare something for next meeting
20:47:21jachym:March 1, 2013 Deadline for submitting paper and workshops proposals March 29 2013 Deadline for submitting poster proposals for next INSPIRE conference in Europe
20:47:38FrankW_G:aghisla: I'll get on it.
20:47:51aghisla:thanks!
20:48:16jachym:I was not attending INSPIRE conferences till now, but members of our team are going regulary there and I think, it should be possible, I go there and "say something"
20:48:44jmckenna:oh good, thanks for speaking up at INSPIRE events
20:48:48* jachym things, the best OSGeo speaker is Arnulf, it's hard to "replace" him
20:49:15FrankW_G:Certainly I think he is pretty knowledgable about INSPIRE related stuff, and presumably osgeo implementations.
20:50:11jachym:next week, there is czech-slovak local (rather big) event in Ostrava, maybe osgeo-czech-something will be formed, you will be informed, if it happens (and what it happens). the process is (will be) very slow here.
20:50:33jmckenna:oh great, osgeo-czech!
20:50:48jachym:I know something about implementations, but I do care about the techincal stuff.
20:51:09aghisla:more diacritics from a land of great FOSS4G developers :)
20:51:19jachym:still the generic feeling of mine is, they think, osgeo-projects are not aware of inspire
20:51:38jachym::-)
20:51:52jachym:that was just for the info, that something is moving, we will se
20:51:53jmckenna:ok, let's pick a day for the next Board meeting
20:51:53jachym:e
20:52:20jmckenna:maybe the virtual meeting will count as that??
20:53:18FrankW_G:that seems reasonable
20:53:32CameronShorter:+1
20:53:32jachym:should be possible for me
20:53:54aghisla:+1
20:54:12jmckenna:ok
20:54:42jmckenna:followup on mailing list with proposed dates
20:54:51jmckenna:I motion to close this Board meeting
20:55:11jachym:shall we make motion out of it?
20:55:22jachym:(sorry)
20:55:43jmckenna:jachym: please
20:55:44jachym:+1 for closing (thanks to all)
20:55:48CameronShorter:+1
20:55:49jmckenna:oh ok
20:55:51jmckenna:+1
20:56:32mpg:+1
20:56:39jmckenna:nice to hear updates from aghisla and jachym - sometimes i'm too in my northamerican hole
20:56:51aghisla:+1 (for closing)
20:56:56jachym:I always am in europe hole
20:57:01jmckenna:ha

20:57:57sigq:Title: FOSDEM 2013 - Home (at fosdem.org)
20:58:01jmckenna:bad that i didn't know of it!
20:58:02jmckenna:wow
20:58:03FrankW_G:A bit open source conference - not just geospatial.
20:58:10aghisla:the biggest european open source developers meeting
20:58:16FrankW_G:bit -> big
20:58:26aghisla:leslie hawthorn is one of the keynotes
20:58:47aghisla:ther will be something like 350 presentations and sessions
20:58:55jmckenna:wow interesting
20:59:19aghisla:if I thought of it earlier, I could have proposed an osgeo booth.
20:59:27* aghisla adds it to 2014 todo list
20:59:31jmckenna:nice
20:59:33dbb:we floated an idea for custom art and data on the Live for that, but we are staying simple
20:59:51dbb:we/I
21:00:03jmckenna:dbb: osgeolive is given out at that event???
21:00:14dbb:well I dont know their plans
21:00:45dbb:someone should let them know that they can make a customized version of the Live, if they wish, and abide by a few basic guidelines
21:00:46* FrankW_G heads off in search of food.
21:00:51aghisla:it could be a very appropriate occasion
21:00:58jmckenna:question for anyone: doe we have any OSGeo contacts in Denmark? I will travel there to give training next month
21:01:11jmckenna:Copenhagen
21:01:41CameronShorter:aghisla, do you know any contacts at the conference who might be the right people to talk to about OSGeo-Live?
21:02:13CameronShorter:Details about adding OSGeo-Live at an event are here:
21:02:13CameronShorter:http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Disc#Including_OSGeo-Live_at_your_event
21:02:15sigq:Title: Live GIS Disc - OSGeo Wiki (at wiki.osgeo.org)
21:03:00aghisla:CameronShorter: actually not, but I'll try to find a way of bringing OSGeo live disc.
21:03:12dbb:oh! my mistake.. not that event, the one in Spain
21:05:44jmckenna:i will try to reach out to the danish chapter. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Danmark
